What is mental health?

Many people assume that any discussion of mental health is irrelevant to them because they have never had a mental health diagnosis, or struggled with symptoms related to a mental health disorder.

However, I would like to stress that when we are discussing "mental health" we are not simply talking about either the absence of, or presence of mental health disorder.

The World Health Organization defines Mental health as a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.

Mental health is at the foundation for our experience of life day to day.

When we raise awareness of what mental health is, and value the importance of mental health, we are more likely to have better outcomes and experience of our life.

NOTE: I don't say this to ignore that multitude of factors that may be outside of our control. Before we can address lifestyle changes, and prioritize improving and protecting our mental health, everyone needs to have their basic human needs covered such as safe and comfortable housing (and food, clothing & other things many people take for granted) as well as the feeling of belonging and acceptance and hope for the future.

The reality is for some people, those things are not in reach without help

*If that applies to you, or anyone you know, please reach out for help!

There are many factors that can have a negative affect on mental health such as our physical health, various life experiences including traumatic events, abuse, loss & grief, breakups, divorce, disability, finances, workload, stress, lifestyle choices, dysfunctional or difficult relationships, discrimination, social disadvantages, lack of social support or social isolation.

If you are having difficulty in any of the above areas, or are feeling like your mental health is not as good as you would like it to be, I encourage you to consider seeking help from a licensed professional

Our lives are complex, having someone compassionate and knowledgeable to listen, ask questions and offer sound (evidence based) advice that is completely personalized can be a great step towards developing insight that can help you make positive changes to improve your mental health, your life, relationships and outlook on life.
